How to get started with Biometric attendance in NextOS?

If you are planning to implement biometric attendance in your school, you can get started by following the steps below.

1. Device Selection

Although many biometric devices are available in the market, NextOS has deep integration with eSSL biometric devices. If you are purchasing a device for the first time, it is advised to choose from the supported eSSL models recommended by NextOS.

The biometric device needs to be purchased by the school from a local eSSL dealer, as this ensures better installation and after-sales support.

2. Installation

Get the installation done through the device dealer or local electrician.
While installing the device, ensure:

  • It is placed at a convenient location for both short and tall students/staff.
  • The mounting height allows easy biometric access.

For student biometric attendance, schools should assess:

  • Peak entry/exit load (students per minute).
  • Number of devices required to avoid long queues.
  • Possibility of staggered entry or exit by class groups.

Note:
NextOS supports both IN and OUT attendance from a single device. However, if required, schools can install separate devices at entry and exit gates.

3. Setup & Integration

Once the device is installed:

  • Connect it to the internet using LAN cable or Wi-Fi.
  • Configure the NextOS URL details in the device
  • Configure the device details in the NextOS.
  • Map users against the device.
  • Sync the users from NextOS to device
  • Register the biometric/RFID against the mapped users in the device
For detailed steps, refer to How can I integrate biometric devices for my school?

Note: Do not add students or staff manually to the biometric device. It will end up creating duplicate users in the device. Once the device is successfully connected to the NextOS server, NextOS will automatically push all mapped users to the biometric device, and attendance codes will be created automatically.
